Beauty | Winter Skin Detox
Winter… It’s all about enjoying the idle hour, or so they say. But, if you’re anything like me, it’s also responsible for wrecking havoc on my skin. Every year, right around March, I start to notice how dry and dull my skin, hair and nails get. So, I’ve had the same routine for the last couple of years for whipping it all back in shape as the first day of spring approaches. I’m sharing my top eight go to items that help detox my winter skin.
Drunk Elephant T.L.C Sukari Babyfacial -
If you haven’t used products by Drunk Elephant before, you’re seriously missing out! It’s probably my favorite product of all that I have listed here. It’s made here in the United States and is only tested ethically. It’s got 25% AHA and 2% BHA blend including Glycolic, Tartaric, Lactic, Citric and Salicylic acids that are perfect for exfoliating the pore line and getting rid of the dead skin cells. I feel like I notice a HUGE different after just one treatment with my handy ol’ Drunk Elephant Cleanser. It does retail for $80.00, but I promise you that it’s worth every penny.
Frequency and Application - I use this about twice a week during the late winter months and I probably use it twice a month during the rest of the year. It’s lasted my quite a while.
Kate Somerville Exfolikate Daily Cleanser -
I originally bought this product because I was all paranoid about the size of my pores. In reality, I’m lucky that they are actually just fine, but I do feel that this product lives up to it’s marketing. This product also contains Lactic and Glycolic acid as well as papaya, pumpkin, and pineapple enzymes. I feel like those enzymes help to leave the skin feeling so moisturized as opposed to dry from being stripped by the acids. If you are in need of softer, glowing skin, this product is excellent for bringing that fresh face forward again. This cleanser also has these amazing little silica particles in it that really leave you feeling like you got a deep clean. It retails for $30.00 for a 4oz. bottle.
Frequency and Application - The cleanser suggest that you can use this twice a day, but it’s too much for my skin. During my skin detox, I use this in the morning everyday for three weeks. During all other times during the year, I just use it on Sundays and use my standard skincare routine.
Sara Happ Brown Sugar Lip Scrub -
I’m on my third tub of this stuff! I absolutely love this lip scrub. I can’t even remember how I found this product, but because I have ultra sensitive lips, I use this stuff like there’s no tomorrow. It’s texture is great. It taste great. And it does a wonderful job! It’s job is to exfoliate, hydrate and heal - and I can confirm, it does what it says it’s going to do. It’s a combination of dark and light brown sugar combined with jojoba and grapeseed oils. I love all of Sara Happ’s lip products - I’m especially in love with her Lip Slip One LuxeBalm - but her Brown Sugar Lip Scrub is a staple in my medicine cabinet. This scrub is priced at $22.00 on amazon.
Frequency and Application - I use this stuff all year long, but during the winter, I use it almost daily.
Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Peel -
This is another one that I’ve been using for years! I like these because they travel so easy and they are so quick to use. If you’re pressed for time, but looking for a great option for giving your skin a refresh, this is a great option for you. These are gentle enough to use everyday, so if your schedule doesn’t allow for other product, this is the perfect skincare option for your detox routine. This is a two step process, but you only have to wait a minute in between using pad 1 and pad 2. So. Friggin. Simple. My skin is combination, really dry in winter, really oily in summer and I find that this cleansing system works really well for both. They retail for $87.99 for (30) - 2 step packets.
Frequency and Application - I can’t use these everyday. During the winter, I use them twice a week in the evening. During the other months, I probably use them once a week and sometimes every other week. And I always take them when I’m traveling because I think they are the easiest way to get a quick feeling of a facial on the go.
Herbivore Botanicals Pink Cloud Rosewater Moisture Cream -
Honest truth - I’m a sucker for all products by Herbivore. I truly haven’t used a single product yet that I haven’t thought was anything less than heavenly. When I picked up this product, it was described to me “the perfect moisturizer.” I thought to myself that that couldn’t be possible. How could a moisturizer be perfect for everyone? But, the sales girl was so cute and her skin looked amazing, so I went for it! This moisture cream is supposed to plump, hydrate, and smooth the skin and it does every bit of that. I feel like this stuff makes my skin feel just like a sweet babies bottom and it smells divine! The best part of this moisture cream is that it’s 100% natural!! How amazing is that? You can find this 1.7oz jar on Amazon for $48.00.
Frequency and Application - For most of the year, I have a skincare system that I use almost daily. But, during the month of March, I switch out to using this daily every morning and evening. And that’s about how long one jar last for me. I do purchase another and use it in combination with the Kate Somerville Cleanser once a week on Sundays.
GLAMGLOW Thirstymud Treatment Mask -
Like Herbivore, I’ve loved GLAMGLOW for a long time. It’s generally a quick application and I love that you can see the charcoal doing it’s thing while it’s on your face. The product smells great and the application is straight forward. I’ve only started using the Thirstymud over the last month or two, but I’m really happy with it. I use it before I go to bed usually on Friday evenings in order to feel like I’m kind of wiping the work week away as I struggle more with getting enough water during the work week than the evenings. I also LOVE this product after traveling and I feel like my face has been sucked dry. Due to the packaging being so small, it packs well too. This runs for $32.97 on Amazon.
Frequency and Application - For my skin, I’ve only been doing this once a week through the winter. I may step it up twice a week during this upcoming Skin Detox month. For the remainder of the year, I would see myself using it twice a month as that’s how I’ve used their other products. But, I think I’ll be sticking with the Thirstymud as it really does seem to add a generous amount of moisture to my skin.
Josie Mararan Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter -
This is my absolute favorite body lotion that I’ve ever used! Usually, body butters are to thick and uncomfortable for me, but this was a suggestion that was made by me from a dermatologist because I have Keratosis Pilaris. I was skeptical buying it, but after a few uses, I fell in love with how lightweight the lotion is and how lovely it smells. The other benefit is how long it lasts!! All. Damn. Day. No joke. So, for my skin type getting as dry as it does during the winter, this is perfect for me. This product is 100% Argan Oil, cruelty free and vegan. All my favorite things. You can pick up an 8oz. tub of this for $36.00.
Frequency and Application - During the winter, I slather this on every time I get out of the shower without fail. I also put it on my hands and arms before bed. During the other months, I put this on every time I shave and it makes my legs look smooth and gorgeous! This lotion is dynamite for my confidence level!
Herbivore Botanicals Coco Rose Lip Conditioner -
Surprise! Surprise! Another Herbivore product made it on the list. This is truly the best lip conditioner I’ve ever used and I still can’t believe that it’s 100% natural. It’s a combination of Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and Bulgarian Rose. No fillers, no artificial ingredients, no animal ingredients, no alcohol, no parabens, sulfates, fragrances, or unnatural preservatives. And even with all of the things that AREN’T in it, it last all.day.long! I wear it under my lipstick and the scent makes me feel so feminine. I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff and don’t see myself switching to a different product any time soon. As a bonus, it’s also made in the USA. It is pricey, but in my opinion, I think it’s completely worth it. It’s $22.00 and you can get it on Prime!
Frequency and Application - I may be having a bit of a love affair with this lip conditioner. As I was saying in reference to the lip scrub, my lips dry out soooo badly in the winter, so I put this on everyday, morning and night. I may even be buying a second one for my purse for those cases where I end up removing my lipstick after a lunch out and reapplying. During the rest of the year, I still do use this product just about daily, but these harsh, dry months require applications twice daily.
And there you have it, my sweet readers. These are all eight items I reach for to detox my skin after the winter. If you have questions about any of the products mentioned here, please leave me a comment and I’ll get back to you asap. Although there are some affiliate links here, I would never suggest an item that I don’t fully stand behind. And these items my friends, they’re lifesavers!
Thanks for stopping by!
