This Life I Styled | One Room Challenge Fall '19 - Week 4

Ladies and Gentlemen!! Things have gotten real around here!

I’m definitely aware that the end of this project is near and certainly starting to feel the pressure. But, when I look at everything that’s been accomplished, I am SO proud! This week was a doozy. My cuticles are shot, I’m pretty sure there’s wallpaper paste stuck in my hair, and my back isn’t feeling it’s best. I say everyt bit of this with a smile on my face though because the amount of progress that my husband and I (along with a helping hand from my father in law and a good friend), is pretty unreal.

To recap, here’s my goal list I was hoping I would accomplish in this past week. You can also view the post here.

Knock out the stair treads. I should probably just leave it there as I know this is going to be a HUGE undertaking!

  1. Find the right stain for the new stair treads to match our new flooring. - NAILED IT!!

  2. Finish painting all remaining cabinet trim and install. - DONE AND DONE

  3. Get all cabinet doors out of our children’s line of fire! - I did this immediately after wrapping up last weeks post.

  4. Make another attempt at photographing my youngest for my feature art. - It took at least 4 or 5 attempts, but the images have been sent to print!

  5. Make and install the washer and dryer surround. - My sweet, dear father in law was such a HUGE help with this one.

  6. Install solid surface countertops. - Don’t want to do that again any time soon, but it’s done!

  7. Install backsplash. - Knocked this out TODAY!

  8. Retrofit my new light fixture from a plug-in to a hardwire fixture. - Check! Check!

Seriously, I told you that I’ve been busy and I wasn’t lying. On top of this list, I received the wallpaper a little earlier than expected and installed that too! A really good friend of mine came by at the drop of a hat and got her hands dirty too. It takes two people to install wallpaper my friends, it takes two.

Installing the penny round tile was a project that I was really looking forward to. Penny tile has always been a favorite of mine and I’ve specified it soooo many times for Clients, but I’ve never had it in my own home. It wasn’t as easy to install as other tile I’ve done, but I am beyond proud of myself to doing it and doing it well. Yes, I just patted myself on my own back and it’s highly likely I’m going to do it again. Because I absolutely LOVE how it looks and I haven’t even grouted it yet!

The stairs… The stairs… The stairs… There’s been about 62 times that I’ve questioned if I should have added this task to my already large renovation project. But, I’ve continued to stay positive and believe that we have the ability to get it done too, even if it is only in the knick of time. Already, we’ve been able to completely remove our entire stair well and replaced the treads from half broken fir treads to delicious oak treads that have been stained to match our new flooring. While we did save money by reusing the existing risers, we’ve applied a primed MDF to the face to brighten it all up and even without the new trim and final details that will be a slow process, I can already feel how much lighter and brighter it’s going to make the tight space appear.

This week is going to be a big push to try and get the remainder of the big construction portion of the project done by this weekend. Here’s what the Week 5 Goal List is looking like:

  • Install all stair trim

  • Paint stair well

  • Install new handrail

  • Install all baseboard, crown molding and trim molding

  • Paint all trim

  • Install new sink and plumbing

  • Grout the backsplash

  • Touch up all paint necessary

  • Build decorative shelves and install

  • Install new light fixtures

It looks pretty ambitious, but I feel good about it. Then, it’s going to be down to the details! AKA - the fun part! I can’t wait! I also can’t wait to see all the other projects come to fruition! If you’re a regular reader and haven’t come to this post from the One Room Challenge site, have you checked it out? There are so many other great transformations just like this one to check out! You can see the Featured Designers projects here and the rest of the One Room Challenge Guest Participants here. It’s worth the visit for those of us who are inspired by great design.
